Making your own perfume is creative, easy and cost-effective

Why do you want to make your own perfume (pure-fume). Walking through department stores these days gives me a blocked nose and a headache. The reason being are synthetic fragrances that lure everywhere. The scents in the beauty section are so overwhelming plus, did you know that there is a lot of nasty stuff in commercial perfumes?

Originally, essential oils were used for perfume making, but these days are long gone. Lab-made scents are much cheaper than the most used scents like rose, neroli, jasmine, sandalwood, ylang-yang and jasmine. Unfortunately, the synthetic fragrances contain phthalates that are know to disrupt our endocrine. So the best is to stay away from these fragrances.

Making your own perfume might take a few experiments, but isn´t that fun? Just a little hint, the scents you create will be lighter than store-bought perfumes, but at least your won´t bother people with scents they cannot stand or might even be allergic to.

Good to know:

The character of a perfume is divided into three notes: head (top), heart (mid), and base.

You will always smell first the head note, which is the most intense one. The heart note will come through a few minutes after and the last one, that lingers the most, is the base note.

You don´t need to formulate your perfume to the above mentioned notes. Some oils are simply stronger in smell than others. Don´t over complicate things, simply go by your liking.

Why blending with essential oils?

Originally, essential oils were used for perfume blending. For example, ylang-ylang is in a famous Chanel No.5 perfume. It has a stress-relieving and aphrodisiac effect. but other famous scents are rose, jasmine, patchouli, sandalwood and neroli. Some oils are very pricey , so most perfumes now use cheap synthetic scents instead.

What you need for creating your own perfume:

- alcohol or a carrier oil like jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, or sweet almond

- doterra pure essential oils

- a vessel

optional: a little funnel (metal is the the best here)

If you make a perfume with alcohol, which is great in an old perfume vessel as a spray, fill in your essential oils and top it up with alcohol. It is recommended to use about 3-4 times the amount of alcohol. Shake your vessel well and let the perfume ripe for two weeks. During this time the fragrances will mix well wit the alcohol and ripen your perfume.

I like mine in a roller bottle with fractionated coconut oil. I use about 10 drops of essential oils and top the bottle up with FCO. Super fast and easy. I then simple roll over my pulse points at my neck and arms and mmmmm what a nice way to smell nice and also experience the therapeutic effects from the oils.

Floral:

- Neroli

- Rose

- Jasmine

- Ylang-Ylang

Herbal:

- Rosemary

- Peppermint

- Eucalyptus

- Tea Tree

Citrus:

- Wild Orange

- Bergamot

- Lemon

- Grapefruit

Woodsy:

- Cedarwood

- Sandalwood

- Juniper Berry

A good trick is to smell all oils together out of the bottle first and see what you like. Start with 3 drops each then add more from a scent you like most until you like the blend. Top it up with your carrier oil.

If you decide to make a spray, top it up with high proof alcohol or filtered water alone with a dash of FCO.
