With more than 60 ingredients, sage is a true wonder plant and a natural remedy for many everyday ailments. Its essential oils have a disinfectant, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. You can make a delicious cough syrup from fresh sage leaves and honey in just a few easy steps, which relieves typical cold symptoms.
I recently just found out that I don't need a garden to grow my own sage. It is a robust plant and grows just fine on a sunny window seal or in a pot on my balcony.
Now, with Winter being in full swing I was wondering what remedies there can be made from natural plants and sage-honey just looked amazing. Even though it will take a few weeks to infuse it is worth it.
It is said that Sage Honey has a calming and anti-inflammatory effect and looking at conventional cough syrups and drops I believe it. When you feel first scratches in your throat, it helps to avert the onset of a cold. If you are already ill, it speeds up the healing process and helps to alleviate symptoms such as throat irritation and sore throat.

Ingredients for your own sage-honey:
500 g honey
15-20 fresh sage leaves
if you like add juice and zest from an organic lemon, add 1 twig rosemary, 1 cinnamon stick and 4-5 cloves
You will also need a big jar that fits about 600 ml or a few small ones
Cooking instructions:
Put honey in a pot or bowl. Wash sage leaves, add to honey and stir. Add lemon juice, lemon zest and other spices as you like. With more or less lemon juice you can influence the consistency of the finished cough syrup. Fill in prepared jars and seal. Let it infuse for four to six weeks.
Melt a teaspoon of the finished sage honey in the mouth several times a day when you feel like you will come down with a cough. You can also use this syrup as a sweetener for your cough tea you are using.
